Penpal anyone?

Photo 1- A Baptist medical mission group came to my school for a medical gira. I worked to register patients and ask what their medical problems were. It was a really fun experience and it was impressive that about 85% of my community members showed up.

Photo 2- In my house, getting ready for a big night out. My headlamp is my best friend.

Today I am heading back to site after our "reconnect in-service training" this past week which is the first time my whole training group (50 of us) have reunited since moving to sites in October. Naturally, everyone was very excited. It was funny to see how much some of my training friends have changed - mostly weight loss and extreme facial hair, but also personality wise. We stayed at this government conference center which happened to be.... a 15 minute walk to a casino (I did not partake, but let me tell you, a few friends left richer and many more poorer) and a 30 min walk to a beach on the Pacific!

I am re-starting my community English classes this coming Saturday. I think I am going to separate the class into Beginners and Intermediate so that the kids stop being so shy and the adults stop being so bossy.

Is anyone interested in being a penpal with someone in my English class? Think of it as an easy way to do some community service that does not require you to wake up early on Saturday mornings. It will seriously change some person in my class' life. My idea is that you, North American do-gooder (of any age), will write a letter in very simple English and Spanish if you know it, and mail it to me, with a few photos of yourself and your life. I will pass it back to one of my students and then assign the student to write a letter and mail it next time I head to town. Due to my lack of post office visits and the fact that I'm pretty sure Panama uses one dugout canoes to get all mail to the United States, it will be a delayed process. However, I think it will be worth it and if it seems appropriate I may coordinate some email correspondence as well.

Email me if you're interested. You can request boy, girl, man, or woman if you want. Invite your other friends to do it too, it doesn't matter if I know the person, beccause I don't want anyone left out in my class! Happy belated St. Patrick's Day and April Fools Day! Unfortunately I forgot to partake in either, but I will try to next year.

  1. how many kids are in your class? I can talk to Austin's teacher at parent/teacher conferences this week and see if she would like to do a project where the kids penpal back and fourth! In any case tho, I would love to penpal with the kids to some of the kids in your class :) so please count myself, Austin and Hannah in!! This is such a great idea! Getting mail is so exciting for kids!

  2. I'll do it! Although the Australia to Panama postal route may not be among the world's fastest.
